What is a Child Dedication?

On Sunday, September 23rd - our church will hold its first ever Child Dedication. This will be an exciting day! This short post will help you understand what a Child Dedication is.

1. A Child Dedication is a Prayer. The focus of the Child Dedication is that the parents, godparents, grandparents and relatives are all agreeing in prayer that this child will be raised in the Christian Faith. This prayer does not make the child a Christian, as that is a decision he or she must make as they grow up but it is a prayer saying that this child will be raised in the Christian faith.

2. A Child Dedication is Public. Just like Baptism, a Child Dedication is to be done in the eyes of the church as the church is part of the child's village that will help raise him or her. The church will come in agreement with the family of the child that they will help raise the child in the ways of Jesus.

3. A Child Dedication is in the Old & New Testament. In 1 Samuel 1, Hannah dedicated her son Samuel to the LORD's work and service. In Luke 2, Mary & Joseph brought Jesus as a child to dedicate him to the LORD's work. This public prayer of dedication is the family of the child agreeing that this child will be dedicated to the LORD.

Details for Day Of:

The Child Dedication will take place on Sunday, September 23rd during the normal worship hour.

After worship, before the preaching, all children and their parents, godparents & grandparents are welcome to come to the front of the church. The Pastor will share a few words about what a Child Dedication is and then ask the families some questions which they will respond, "We will." These questions will be along the lines of, "Do you commit to raise this child in the Lord?"

After the words of commitment. The Pastor will pray a blessing over the children and their families. Traditionally children being dedicated wear white [to symbolize their purity] yet, that is not required. There will be a photographer the day of service to take photos of this special occasion. Afterwards, we will have cake and celebrate the children and their families.

Thank you for being part of this special day. Please reach out if you have any questions.
